What counts as a web comic

The reader has to be able to do something to your comic. If what they do changes what happens next, it counts. Here are four things you can build in.

Panels that react to clicks
The reader clicks, hovers or drags something, and the page responds.

Reveals tied to scrolling
Panels appear or change as the reader scrolls down the page.

Branching choices
The reader picks a path, and that choice changes what happens next.
04
Sound, animation and small games
You can add audio, animation or a small game inside the comic.

The better the website is to use, the larger the share of your drawing hours we can approve toward the project.

Any language or framework works: plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, React, Svelte, p5.js, Twine or Ren’Py. Use your own art.

The reader clicks a panel to pick what happens next, and the choice changes the ending.

A comic that keeps going as the reader scrolls, with a reveal near the end.

Each panel is locked behind a puzzle or riddle. The reader solves it to reach the next page.

Your most chaotic hackathon moment
Turn a real story from a hackathon into a comic. True stories work well.

A comic that talks back
The reader types a response, and the next panel reacts to what they wrote.

One panel, infinite zoom
One large image the reader scrolls or zooms into, with the story hidden in the detail.

01What counts as an "interactive web comic"?

Any comic where the reader can do something that changes what happens next. Panels that react to clicks, reveals tied to scrolling, branching paths, sound, animation and small embedded games all count.

02I cannot draw. Can I still join?

Yes. The art does not have to be good. What matters is the story you tell.

03What tools or languages can I use?

Anything that runs in a browser. Plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, React, Svelte, p5.js, Twine and Ren'Py all work.

04How do I log my hours?

Log code hours on Hackatime and art hours on Lapse. Both count toward what you can spend in the shop.

05Can I work with a friend?

Yes. You can work alone or in a team. Everyone logs their time separately.

06Is there a deadline?

The window runs from 22 July to 14 August 2026. The final ship date is announced on Slack.

07Is this real?

Yes. Hack Yeah is run by Hack Club, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps teenagers build real projects.

08Is the submission form open?

Yes. Use the submit button at the top of the page.
